Tell us why you chose the sport you compete in?
It was a natural evolution for me. I found myself working out as a teenager when a gym was built next to my school. I loved it so started training more and more consistently and qualified as a personal trainer. I work in a career path that I genuinely love and can't imagine myself ever switching away from the fitness industry.
What is your motivation to be the best at your sport?
The reason I don't compete is because I don't want to compare myself to other people in a sport which has subjective criteria. People can be proud of their physique yet feel disheartened when they don't place in a competition. To me it is about challenging myself rather than comparing to other people.
What would you consider to be the most important aspect of success in your sport?
I think it depends on the person. To one person being 100% dedicated and winning a title can be the most important thing in the world for them. For someone else they may just want to have a good enough physique so they can feel confident within themselves. In that regard, the most important thing is happiness because everyone will have different goals and different motivations. I don't want to have a great physique at the expense of my social life.
What is your training philosophy?
Find a routine you enjoy, stick with it and make sure you constantly progress. I don't care if someone trains like a bodybuilder, powerlifter, Olympic lifter, gymnast or otherwise. You can obtain an impressive physique using a wide array of modalities. Enjoy what you are doing so you are more inclined to work hard at it. As you progress over time the results will come.
What is your nutrition philosophy?
Consistent progress beats inconsistent imperfection. I would prefer someone absolutely nails the basis and applies them for years rather than someone follow the "perfect" diet only to last a few weeks before they fall off the bandwagon. Nothing in this sport comes quickly so you have to have a diet plan you can follow in the long run.
How do supplements play a role in your recovery and performance?
I have used supplements for years in attempt to try and obtain an edge. Once you have been working out for years progress is slow so I like to stack the odds in my favour wherever I can.
If you could only choose 3 supplements to use for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?
Can I cheat and pick 3 product categories?! If so, protein powder, pre workout and a multivitamin. I use Select Protein to help hit my protein target for the day. It is convenient and tastes great so I can use it in healthy recipes (like pancakes, cheesecakes, brownies etc). Pre workouts are one of those things I enjoy taking and help ensure I have a good workout especially if I have a busy schedule and have been working long hours. 4:30am sessions or workouts at the end of 9 hour fitness expos are a lot easier with two scoops of Prolific! I use TruMulti multivitamin because it helps keep my bases covered, especially when I am dieting and food intake (and therefore micronutrients from food) are decreasing.
What is one supplement that you noticed had an immediate/significant impact on your success in your chosen sport?
The supplement I use with the most immediate impact is a caffeinated pre workout. It's impact is acute so you feel it after the first dose rather than having to use it daily for extended periods of time. As I have a busy schedule it is often the difference maker between me skipping a workout and me getting in a great workout. In that regard it they have a big impact because they help me hit training sessions I would have otherwise skipped.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our customers or your fans/followers?
Everyone has different goals so make sure you do what makes you happy.
Would you like to thank any sponsors?
Physique Enhancing Science (PEScience) who I have worked with for over 6 years now. It is an honour to be a part of such an incredible company and watch them grow from a tiny American start-up into a brand that is sold in multiple continents.
And Finally... Do you have a morning ritual and if so what is it?
I hit the gym first thing in the morning. That way it doesn't matter what my working day throws at me, I know I have fit my workout in. I get up, get washed and hit the gym straight away then have breakfast and start work.
